Towns and cultures
On four wheels from place to place
The majority of the lake’s visitors arrive by car. The adventures begin already on the roads approaching Lake Tisza. During our journey the mirrored surface of the water appear on the left, then on the right, and we are accompanied by birds of prey gliding in the air and a cavalcade of rampant vegetation. However attractive the pleasures of the water, it is always worth making a stop at the villages encircling the lake like a string of pearls. The adjacent villages are rich in churches and cultural heritage. The thatched, porched houses in the local style show the characteristic implements and furniture of the various historical periods. During your visit you will certainly feel as if you have gone back to a world of 50 or 100 years ago. Before finishing our yet imaginary voyage in the region of Lake Tisza, let’s pick out some tit-bits from what’s on offer, which is such a colourful and rich variety that we would certainly be unable to describe everything in a few sentences At Tiszafüred, in the Pottery House named after Gáspár Nyúzó, we can get an idea of the traditions of the famous ceramics of this village. At Sarud we will be given a foretaste of the evocative popular architecture, while near Egyek, on the rim of the Hortobágy, we can visit the only Csárda Museum in Hungary arranged in the Meggyes Csárda.

A glimpse in the calendar of events
To avoid resting on our laurels at Lake Tisza during the summer nights, there are programs on offer, looking back on the history of the last decade: the festivities of the now traditional Abádszalók Summer, the Days of Csege and the Fishery Days of Tiszafüred. The sporting events, the concerts of classic and light music and the different competitions will ensure a pleasant diversion for everyone. If you are looking for recreation and relaxation and you would enjoy something more than the idyllic silence of nature, and are interested in the way of life of the local people who respect and guard their traditions, then we would advise you to retreat for a few days within the cool walls of a hospitable village house, take part in the laborious life of the landlord, taste your the cuisine of your hosts and get acquainted with their domestic animals. The region offers plenty of possibilities for doing so. Kunhegyes should be mentioned first among these places.
If you would like to experience the feel of the nightlife at Lake Tisza, then Abádszalók, Tiszafüred and Kisköre on the inlet would certainly be the best choice. These three towns attract masses with their tumultuous life. Thousands of people can find first-class possibilities for sports and relaxation. If you wanted to taste the Hungarian fish and game dishes or simply enjoy some speciality of the European cuisine, you would find it difficult to choose from among the many quality restaurants. If you desire to experience something very special not available elsewhere, you should go and visit Nagykörű, called the Cherry Garden of Hungary, where the 200 acres cherry orchard has a history of nearly one hundred years. In April, the cherry trees bur to be in the romance of the "puszta" when you visit Nagyiván, called the "Gate of the Hortobágy" and located on the vast plain, rich in storks and the characteristic pole wells. There is no want of pastime and diversion in this region. It is worth spending a weekend in the villages adjacent to the Lake and choose from the diversity of programmes. If you are intrested in festive cavalcades, you should certainly visit Karcag to see the Cultural Festival of the Nagykunság or the motorbike speed championship at Kunmadaras or the cherry Festival of Nagykörű.
